Emergency medical training

I found what looks like a couple of good wilderness emergency training courses at http://www.soloschools.com/wemt.html and http://www.remotemedical.com/Wilderness-EMT-WEMT However they were both very expensive (2k to 3k), since they were certified courses.

I found these while I was looking for some survival medical training, but I really wanted something beyond first aid and more for medical needs in a collapsed economy. I don't care if it's certified like the one above, but I would like to learn the truely useful stuff. You would think some Doctors, Nurses, EMT's might get together and create a rural medical training program with the economic fallout that many see coming.

Try Medical Corps http://www.medicalcorps.org/class.htm. Their programs are good and lots of fun. The instructors and most of the people who attend are survivalists, (and the time I went everyone seemed positively giddy about being around so many other survivalists).

The class advertised JRH Enterprises is also very good, and it's relatively inexpensive.

Re: Emergency medical training

I took the Wilderness First Responder class this past summer with NOLS out in Colorado. I had taken EMT-B back in the day, and wanted to fill in the gaps with the WFR class. Boy was I wrong! The WFR class was the best medical training I have ever received. EMT is geared for packaging people up and getting them to a hospitial. WFR is about taking care of people for extended periods of time (hrs, or even days). EMT is more for professional rescuers. I CANNOT HIGHLY recommend the Wilderness First Responder Course enough! If you want good solid hands on emergency medical training, then this is the course you want. It was well worth the $$.

I would agree totally about recommending a WFR. I am currently a month or so into my EMT-B course and there is little that hasn't been covered by my previous WFR certs. You can also get a wilderness upgrade for an EMT, that does the same sort of thing. I would also say go with one of the national Wilderness Certifying programs which are SOLO, WMI, and WMA. One of the most fun and informational weeks you could spend.

In addition to the medical, it helps get you in the mindset of risk assessment, and learning how to judge probable consequences before you engage in an activity. Personally I think anyone who spend more than a couple of weekends a year in the outdoors owes it to themselves and their companions to take this class.
